Susannah Constantine shares tips for saving money doing laundry
According to Bed Kingdom, many Britons dry their wet laundry on airers overnight in bedrooms, due to living in small spaces or having no other option.
However, this can cause several issues such as mould and damp as well as many respiratory problems.
Laundry experts at In The Wash said: “Keeping moisture-filled laundry in your living spaces doesn’t just encourage mould and dampness, it can also lead to respiratory issues, and wet laundry can be a bit smelly too.
“The bedroom is one of the rooms you spend the most time in. Given the fact that wet laundry encourages mould growth, dampness and potential health issues it would be better to keep it out of a room you spend a lot of time in.”
It is also hard to keep a bedroom ventilated as they don’t have extractor fans and it may be cold keeping the window open.

The experts added: “Drying laundry in such an ill-equipped environment could enhance higher chances of getting a mould infestation.
“In turn, this could lead to more serious health complications for the bedroom user, damp could give rise to several structural problems in the bedroom, and said problems could be costly to put right.”
Bed Kingdom recommended investing in a dehumidifier if you do choose to dry clothing in the bedroom because it helps to promote healthy air.

The bed experts explained: “Don’t dry clothes on radiators, they can cause a build-up of mould in your home and cause allergy irritations, or even lung problems.
“They also trap heat so your home doesn’t warm up as much while your boiler is working harder, so will end up costing you more. An airer in front of a dehumidifier uses much less energy.”
To avoid all of these problems, it is best to place wet laundry in a spare room, dedicated laundry room or garage if possible.

If you do not have a spare room, a room that you use infrequently is the next best option, placing the wet clothing on a drying rack.
The laundry pros continued: “This means that you won’t be exposed to damp as your clothes dry and you can close the door, to keep the heat in or encourage airflow by keeping a window open.”
For Britons living in a small space, place the airer as close to a heat source as possible to help the laundry dry faster, keeping doors closed if possible.
